Skipping church. (The definitive rules)

I think we all need this wisdom.
I want to be honest with you.

Sometimes I exaggerate the illnesses of my children so that we can’t attend church. There I said it. I feel better. Andy Stanley, doesn’t read this site so I’m OK. He’ll never know.

But sometimes, I do the exact opposite and try to heal my kids of any Sunday morning sickness they have so that we can make sure not to miss church.

How do I decide which step to take when I see a runny nose? Much like Roxette, I listen to my heart. That doesn’t work all the time though so I thought it might be helpful if I wrote the definitive rules when it comes to skipping church. Feel free to forward these to your pastor or print them in the bulletin for your ministers.

The "Comma Of Grace”

Stuff Christians Like just did a post about the "comma of grace" that is pretty amazing. You should go over and read it. Just click on the comma to be transported there.

Things You CAN'T Do When You're NOT a Dog

The video below is a little PG13, but funny none-the-less.

Debating whether God is a Mac or a PC

Is God Mac or PC?

That is, up in heaven, is he cranking away on a Mac or a PC? Does he love the iPhone or is he currently listening to Michael W. Smith’s greatest hits on a Zune? Does he have a little apple sticker stuck anywhere?

I feel like lists work well on blogs, so let’s break it down list style and weigh all the facts.

An Interesting Take On A Christmas Billboard

Are we putting too many words in Jesus' mouth?

Leg dropping elves

I started to think about the whole “real meaning of Christmas” debate and “is Santa bad” discussion that you almost are required by law to have if you’re a Christian blogger, I started to think about that elf. He was just sitting there with a smug look on his face perched on the fireplace mantle looming over our nativity scene below on the hearth. Instead of the traditional Santa vs. Jesus discussion, I began to imagine what would happen if that elf ever ran into the characters from the nativity scene. What would that conversation look like? I present you:

Elf on the shelf meets the characters from the nativity scene.

Our God Is Weird...

This is worth the read...
Our God is wonderful

Our God is unfathomable.

Our God is uncontainable.

Our God is weird.

Has that ever happened to you? Have you ever had a moment where something happened where you couldn’t do anything but say, “This is weird, but…?”

The Stuff Christians Like Book: Now Available For Pre-Order

If you are a regular reader of this blog you already know that I follow the blog Stuff Christians Like. It is a humorous take on the weird things some (read most) Christians do. Individually we do not do them all, but it seems that each one of them is done by someone I know...or at least know about.

Well, there is now a Stuff Christians Like book coming to a bookstore near you. You can pre-order it now, or you can wait to buy it in April.

And now from the author, 7 reasons to pre-order the book Stuff Christians Like
  1. There are more than 120 posts inside, including more than 80 never before seen, brand new, never on the site ideas.
  2. A really talented artist named Mark Sheeres illustrated it and the work he did is hilarious.
  3. It’s only $10.39.
  4. It only weighs 235 grams. (Not sure why Amazon lists the grams but if you prefer books in low the 200 gram range, you will love this one.)
  5. I was afraid a publisher might make me water down the message, but Zondervan didn’t make me pull punches. Instead, the editor I worked with really amplified the humor and honesty of the whole thing.
  6. It comes out in April. By then you will have forgotten you ordered it. One day, on a bright spring afternoon, you’ll walk to the mailbox and say, “Oh, what’s this?” And then you’ll do the robot.
  7. If lots of people pre-order it, Zondervan will let me publish another book and get me a hybrid tour bus that runs on skittles and make us a collectible Stuff Christians Like belt buckle line.
OK, I made up that last one, but the list felt really incomplete with only 6 items.

Are We All Kanye West

I am not a fan of awards shows. The only award shows I like are the ones at the end of the World Series, Super Bowl, NCAA Championship, etc. I generally don't care to watch the ones with music & movie stars. And since I don't watch them I missed the episode where Kanye West interrupted Taylor Swift's acceptance speech to tell the world that he did not think she deserved to win. It sounds like a pretty rotten thing to do. Sounds like a good reason to 'hate on' Kanye.

Well, this morning the blog Stuff Christians Like reminded me that we are all Kanye. Click on the picture above to read that article.

Do You Have A Christian "Doesn't Count List"

A very intriguing blog post on Stuff Christians Like. Click on the picture to read the post.
I think every Christian has a “Doesn’t Count List” (DCL), a collection of small things we do that might not be completely in God’s will for our life, but they’re so tiny they don’t really matter. If you say you don’t have a DCL, apparently lying is one of the items on yours because that’s just what you did.

Booty, God, Booty - You Will Have To Watch The Video To 'Get That'

I am a regular reader of the blog "Stuff Christians Like" and I REALLY do enjoy it. I have shared a number of the posts from that blog here and I know many of you have started following it as well.

This past weekend the author of the blog spoke at a church in Tennessee. The video below is of that sermon. I have not had the chance to watch it all yet, but I have enjoyed the parts that I have seen. If you want to understand the title of this blog post you will need to watch the first 7 minutes of this video. I hope you take that time...

Why Do You Keep Refusing The Gift Of The Desert Road?

A great perspective from Stuff Christians Like.
Your thing, your dream or goal or vision could be a million different things, and when it doesn't happen, when it takes longer than we want, it's so easy to get frustrated. To get disappointed, to think that the time delay is because maybe you're not doing something right. Maybe God is mad at you. Maybe if you were a better Christian things would be happening faster and you wouldn't be on a desert road.

But what if that's not right?

What if God loves you too much to send you to war? What if He loves you too much to throw you into situations you're not ready for?

What if that desert road is a gift?

Church Olympics: The Complain Off

A great blog post from Stuff Christians Like...
In this thrilling bout of athletic prowess, each church that enters the Olympics will put forth their greatest grumbler. They will find their best complainer, the person who is never happy, never tired of whining and forever spreading verbal vinegar or paragraphs of poison and then put them on top of a platform. The platform will be ten feet high and will be sticking out of a pool of Miracle Whip and Cinnabons. (Miracle Whip is like mayonnaise’s underachieving cousin and Cinnabons smell roughly 900% better than they actually taste. So as they’re falling the loser will briefly think they’re about to land in a delicious cinnamon roll. Nope. Just a Cinnabon slathered with Miracle Whip.)

Is Mutton Hollow Chevy more powerful than God?

Stuff Christians Like has figured out how powerful God is.
Considering that this is probably a question philosophers and theologians have struggled with for thousands of years, that’s pretty nice of me. Who knew one day a random blogger would figure it out and share it for free. What can I say? I’m a giver.

So here it is:

God is slightly less powerful than Mutton Hollow Chevy.

Jon & Kate plus 8

Let me start by saying I do not watch this show. We do not have cable so it is not an option for me, but I would like to think I would not watch it even it was available.

That being said, I just read a blog post over at Stuff Christians Like. It has some very interesting insight. I really like this:
Did Jon and Kate get what they deserve? I don't know. I've seen other Christians express this opinion but I don't know Jon and Kate. I know me. And I didn't get what I deserved. I got grace. I got forgiveness. I got Christ. I got rescued from the ruins of a life that seemed beyond redemption. I got a second chance and a 10th chance and a 300th chance. I didn't get what I deserved. And when we say that someone, "Got what they deserved," whether we're talking about a reality TV couple, our relatives or our neighbors, we lose sight of grace, which is the undercurrent of our ntire faith and a gift we do not deserve.
