Big Picture: Vancouver 2010, part 2 of 2

Seventeen days after it began, the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver are now complete. A total of 258 medals were awarded, with the United States, Germany, and Canada collecting the most medals. The second half of the games went much smoother than the glitchy first week, with many memorable performances by athletes from all over the world. Last night, a crowd of 60,000 filled BC Place in Vancouver for the Closing Ceremony, which took place shortly after the final event - a Gold Medal win by host nation Canada's ice hockey team over the U.S. The Olympic flame will next pass to London, England in 2012 for the Summer Games, and to Sochi, Russia in 2014 for the next Winter games. Collected here are photos from the second half of this year's events in Vancouver (see Part 1 for the first half). (45 photos total)

Fight Between Flight Attendants Grounds Rochester Flight

A Delta Connection flight operated by Pinnacle Airlines was cancelled after an altercation between two female flight attendants.

Steve Mazur was bumped from two flights attempting to get to Dallas. The first was because he was on standby and the second bump was the result of the brawl.

“Apparently they got into a fistfight on the plane,” said Mazur. “The pilot decided to kick everyone off the plane.”

The Mummy Mug

Why a hot drink safety solution?

Because in a split second, a nice cup of tea can scar a child for life.

A toddler that reaches up to the kitchen bench and pulls a cup of hot tea over him – or herself, or a cup accidentally falls from the coffee table during a busy visit of friends and family .… this is all that it takes to cause an unnecessary injury that can have consequences for life.

Big Picture: Afghanistan, February, 2010

In southern Afghanistan's Helmand Province, Thousands of American, Afghan and British troops entered Marja in the biggest offensive of the war, with the goal of destroying the Taliban's largest haven and restoring government presence in southern Afghanistan. Resistance was sporadic and fierce as troops seized positions around the area. Stricter combat rules and a concerted effort by the Afghan government and NATO forces were aimed at not only protecting the civilian population, but planning for the aftermath, building infrastructure, support and trust in an area long dominated by the Taliban. Collected here are images of the country and conflict over the past month, part of an ongoing monthly series on Afghanistan. (43 photos total)

At 3:34 am local time, today, February 27th, a devastating magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck Chile, one of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded. According to Chile's interior minister, at least 214 people are now known to have been killed. The earthquake also triggered a Tsunami which is right now propagating across the Pacific Ocean, due to arrive in Hawaii in hours (around 11:00 am local time). The severity of the Tsunami is still not known, but alerts are being issued across the Pacific. As this is a breaking story, I will be adding more photos to this entry, as warranted, throughout the day. (35 photos so far)
