How much water does it take to make ... ?

It takes the amount of water from a small in-ground pool, about 4,000 gallons, to make that 20-pound bag of dog food at the supermarket.

And that bag of sugar? It took nearly five bathtubs of water to produce.

Those are some findings from a new assessment, the first of its kind in 30 years, published in Environmental Science & Technology.

Big Picture: Holy Week, 2010

Today is Good Friday, when Christians commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Good Friday is part of Holy Week, a series of religious holidays and observations commemorating the last week of the earthly life of Jesus Christ and his resurrection on Easter Sunday. Observances vary widely around the world, often incorporating elements of local pre-Christian traditions, and range from the elaborate and fanciful to simple and reverential. Collected here is a handful of photographs from this year's Holy Week around the world. (39 photos total)

48 Hour Human Timelapse for Charity

At 0630 on Thursday 4th March 2010 we began the 48 Hour Timelapse of a human subject with the Canon 5D Mark II and TC-80N3 Timer Remote Controller. We finished at 0630 on Saturday 6th March 2010.

After getting involved with the Belfast4Haiti event Rick from redskyni.com and I wanted to do something extra to raise awareness in our social and business circles to hopefully get people talking about the Haiti and Chile disaster. So we dedicated the piece to help raise funds for both countries and all money will go to the Disasters Emergency Committee justgiving.com/belfast4haiti.

Big Picture: Afghanistan, March, 2010

In Kandahar, the birthplace of the Taliban, American forces are pushing forward, aiming to break the Taliban's hold on the city and southern Afghanistan. The number of foreign troops under US and NATO command is set to rise to 150,000 by August, with most of the new deployment heading to the south. Meanwhile, across other parts of the country dominated by insurgents, some U.S. efforts are now aimed at rebuilding and securing mobile phone towers. Taliban forces have destroyed or crippled some 200 of Afghanistan's 6,000 towers since 2008, isolating communities they seek to control. Collected here are images of the country and conflict over the past month, part of an ongoing monthly series on Afghanistan. (42 photos total)
