Motivational Posters: Winston Churchill Edition

I have often heard people talk about who they would invite to dinner if they were able to include any people from history (think Bill & Ted's Big Adventure). I am not sure who my entire list would include, but I think Winston Churchill would definitely get an invitation. He is one person that I have found intriguing ever since I first learned about him in high school.

Robert Gates, Secretary of War

Defense Secretary Robert Gates is a man that I have grown to admire. He seems to have an apolitical approach to his job which I think is in the best interest of our soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines. He also seems to view himself as responsible for their welfare. I would think just about anyone in uniform would be much more comfortable under his leadership than they were under Donald Rumsfeld (I don't think Rumsfeld was as evil as the press/left portrayed him though).
"How can you like a job when you go to Walter Reed or Bethesda [military hospitals] and you know you sent those young men and women in harm's way? Every single person in combat today, I sent there, and I never forget that for a second. So, no, I don't enjoy my job," Gates told CBS in an interview that aired on "60 Minutes."

Hurricane Season

Did you know that Hurricane Season starts in less than 2 weeks? It was news to me, but since I no longer live in Hurricane Alley why should I keep up with it?

According to the Houston Chronicle's Science Blog there is already a system between Florida and Cuba. This has a very low chance of development, but it could affect the weekend weather along the Gulf Coast States.

(And yes, I do keep track of hurricane season. I may not be in the hurricane path, but I am definitely in the path of evacuees.)

Does A Curveball Curve?

Well, maybe not as much as you think it does? Click the link below to see an animation that demonstrates how your peripheral vs central visual systems see things differently. It is pretty amazing.
In baseball, a curveball creates a physical effect and a perceptual puzzle. The physical effect (the curve) arises because the ball’s rotation leads to a deflection in the ball’s path. The perceptual puzzle arises because the deflection is actually gradual but is often perceived as an abrupt change in direction (the break). Our illusions suggest that the perceived “break” may be caused by the transition from the central visual system to the peripheral visual system. Like a curveball, the spinning disks in the illusions appear to abruptly change direction when an observer switches from foveal to peripheral viewing.

Fast Food: Calories Per Dollar

New York now requires chain restaurants to prominently post calorie counts for the items on their menu. This information now makes it easy to determine the best (or worse) calorie bang for your fast food dollar.
